Bennett Amendment (#3568) on DC Marriage
Below please find an analysis from my colleague Gregg Nunziata regarding Sen. Bennett’s amendment (#3568) on DC marriage laws…
Senator Bennett has offered an amendment to suspend the issuance of marriage licenses to same sex couples in D.C. until a referendum or initiative is held.Amendment Terms• The government of the District of Columbia shall immediately suspend issuance of marriage licenses to same sex couples until the people of the District have the opportunity to hold a referendum on initiative on the question of same sex marriage. Background• The Council of the District of Columbia recently legalized same sex marriage in apparent opposition to the wishes of the people of the District.
• The D.C. Board of Elections and the DC Superior Court, both unelected, thwarted efforts at popular initiatives on the marriage question.
• This Amendment would empower the residents of DC to vote on this important issue.
